"Boston in Jazz: A Long and Lustrous Tradition"
In the course of the past one hundred years the city of Boston has been home to an astounding number of major jazz musicians. Artists such as Harry Carney, Sonny Stitt, Jaki Byard, Roy Haynes, Rebecca Parris,George Wein, Jimmy Woode, Alan Dawson, Charlie Mariano, Tony Williams,Jerry Bergonzi,Ruby Braff,Ricky Ford, Terri Lyne Carrington, and many many others have been prime contributors to the jazz artform and all were/are sons and daughters of this famed city through birth or longstanding association. Home of the Berklee College of Music and The New England Conservatory, Boston continues to nurture and polish some of the most important student-practitioners of jazz. In keeping with the theme of JazzBoston's JazzWeek '10, this program will focus exclusively on many of the Boston-area musicians who have made their mark in this music.
Some wonderful jazz moments have been captured in U.S. and foreign films and television broadcasts over the years. This program will feature video excerpts of some of the essential jazz artists of the past. For the most part, present-day performers will not be included simply because as contemporary artists their works are readily available in various media formats. The artists highlighted will be those no longer with us but whose works still constitute an essential record of the best of jazz in its first century of documented existence. While most of the names are familiar---Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Count Basie, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis, Johnny Griffin, Wes Montgomery,Oliver Nelson, Max Roach, Billie Holiday, Mary Lou Williams,Oscar Peterson, et al--the video excerpts shown will not be.
