New England Premiere of "Hell on Wheels" and Kick-Off Party for the 2009 Boston Derby Dames Season Friday, February 20 at 8pm General Admission Tickets: $8 in advance, $10 day of screening
The crazy birth and growing pains of modern-day roller derby BDD is vividly portrayed in "Hell on Wheels"--an award-winning documentary of the birth of modern day roller derby in 2001 in Austin, Texas. What began with plans of creating a circus-like spectacle on skates has spawned more than 200 skater-run leagues in North America and Europe, as entrepreneurship and serious athleticism have become just as big a part of the roller derby revival as campy pseudonyms and sassy uniforms. Catch scenes of BDD's recently relocated General Lee Feisty in her earliest derby days, skating (and oil wrestling?!) with TXRD's Rhinestone Cowgirls. Read more about the movie here: http://www.hellonwheelsthemovie.com/ The Boston Derby Dames is Boston’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned and -operated flat track roller derby league and proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). http://www.bostonderbydames.com/ The Boston Derby Dames have been getting their blocks off since May 2005 when the first intrepid rollergirls began training at rinks and hockey courts throughout greater Boston. The league now boasts more than 50 active skaters on three home teams: the Cosmonaughties, Nutcrackers, and Wicked Pissahs. Our all-star travel team, the Boston Massacre, has been in action since October 2005 and has traveled to play teams in Las Vegas, Long Island, and Seattle, and has hosted Charm City (MD), Atlanta, Cincinnati, Dominion(VA), Maine, and more. As of November 2008, the Massacre is ranked 10th inthe nation among more than 60 WFTDA leagues.
