ULTRASONIC ROCK ORCHESTRA

performs

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

SEE AND HEAR A TASTE OF URO’S “Jesus Christ Superstar”!

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” changed the face of musical theater when it debuted on Broadway in 1971 with Chart-topping songs such as “Superstar,” “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.”. Now the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra (URO)—a huge,10-vocalist rock band—brings its version of the rock opera that changed the world to the Regent stage. It’s a full-on contemporary rock ‘n’ roll spectacle, complete with epic lighting, thunderous sound—and not a robe or sandal in sight.

This live performance is the natural offshoot of the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra’s first studio recording, “Jesus Christ Superstar—A 21st Century Tribute to the Brown Album” recorded a decade ago, born out of the URO co-founder’s mutual admiration of this classic rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice — first recorded in 1970 with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple singing “Jesus” (the fabled “Brown Album.”)

Now, by popular demand, for the second time on the Regent stage, the URO will perform the 26-song hit epic in its entirety as you’ve never heard nor seen it before.

He is the only artist to have a No. 1 song, No. 1 movie, and No. 1 TV show in the same week. Life Magazine coined the phrase “teen idol” after him and he is credited with pioneering the country rock sound. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson’s life and music touched millions, and now his twin sons, multi-platinum recording artists Matthew & Gunnar Nelson, relive the music and memories in their multi-media event, Ricky Nelson Remembered.  This multimedia event features hit songs like “Travelin’ Man” and “Hello Mary Lou” as well as never-before-seen interviews from the artists Ricky Nelson influenced, including Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, and Chris Isaak. Matthew and Gunnar’s musical event is heartfelt and full of laughter.  Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash on his way to perform a New Year’s Eve concert in 1986. His legacy includes 53 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and nineteen other top-ten hits. He is one of the biggest- selling artists of all time, a Golden Globe winner for his performance alongside John Wayne in Rio Bravo and in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.  From Ozzie and Harriet to Ricky to Matthew and Gunnar, the Nelsons are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family in history with three successive generations of No. 1 hit makers.

Ever since 2002 – when Charlie started touring this theatrical oddity – he’s been asked questions like:
“How long do you see yourself doing this show?” and…
“Don’t you get bored of doing the same show night after night?”

The long answer is that since its first tour across the North American Fringe circuit, One Man Star Wars has performed over 1,200 times in more than 180 cities across four continents. From Off-Broadway in New York to London’s West End, from Dubai’s resorts to the Glastonbury Music Festival- in small towns, big cities, at Lucasfilm’s own Star Wars conventions, at fundraisers- this show has been places.
With stops in the USA, UAE, Australia, Northern and Southern Ireland, Singapore, New Zealand and 100+ cities across the UK- why would anyone want such a ride to end?

Who knows what else might come in the future?
The One Man Star Wars Prequels?

Perhaps Charlie’s One Man Lord of the Rings will ride again.
Or maybe the One Man Terms of Endearment will rise and leave all other one person shows in ashes.

For now the One Man Star Wars resides in Geek Heaven and there’s no better place to be.

A Benefit Concert for FOLK New England

PATTY LARKIN

Patty Larkin redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising vocals and lyrics. Acoustic Guitar hails her “soundscape experiments” while Rolling Stone praises her “evocative and sonic shading.” She has been described as “riveting” (Chicago Tribune), “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly) and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter).

“Larkin’s shows are celebrations of song, guitar and voice coming together in perfect unison with a perfect blend of skill and humility. Patty Larkin would never tell you that she’s a great guitarist, but she’ll show you all night long.”_CityBeat

Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion

“Moves seamlessly from Beck-meets-Beatles rock to soundscapes, folk-roots and Beach Boys summertime rock… [with] a sincerity that is undeniable.” (RELIX)  “baroque folk with a quietist edge” (Nashville Scene)

Tumbling Bones
Tumbling Bones is a trio of young men inspired by old music. They play a mix of original compositions and traditional material drawing on bluegrass, pre-war folk, and a bit of the contemporary rock ‘n’ roll the guys were reared on.

“Take one listen to Loving a Fool and you’ll feel like you’re front and center at the Grand Ole Opry.  Yes, they’re that good.”
- Kathy Sands-Boehmer, (No Depression)

FOLK New England
Founded by Betsy Siggins in 2009, FOLK New England’s mission is to document, preserve, interpret and present the ongoing cultural legacy of folk music in all its forms, with emphasis on New England’s contribution to the enrichment of North American life.

ABOUT LUTHER “GUITAR JR.” JOHNSON
Chicago’s West Side guitar style, alternating stinging single-note leads with powerful, distorted chords, was created in the late 1950s, mostly by Otis Rush and Magic Sam. Originally developed because their small bands couldn’t afford both a lead and rhythm guitar, it grew into an important contribution to modern blues. Freddie King, Luther Allison, Jimmy Dawkins and Mighty Joe Young were the other “big name” West Side stylists. A less familiar name is Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson, who, after serving a long sideman apprenticeship, has blossomed into a strong performer in his own right.

Ironically, Luther’s leap into the worldwide blues spotlight was earned as a member of the premier South Side blues band, Muddy Waters’ group. Luther played for seven years with Muddy, touring Europe, Japan and Australia as well as across the U.S.

Luther’s story, like that of so many bluesmen, began in Mississippi. He grew up in Itta Bena, where he was born in 1939. His first musical experience was leading a church choir in nearby Greenwood, where he also used to see legends like Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Nighthawk and Muddy Waters. Luther’s mother bought him his first guitar, a Roy Rogers special, and a cousin taught him how to tune it.

He came to Chicago in 1955, confident as a singer but still struggling with his guitar. Drummer Ray Scott gave him his first gig, as a vocalist and dancer. Floyd Murphy, the great ex-Sun Records session guitarist, was playing in the group. “I would watch him, but I would never let him know I was trying to learn from him,” Luther recollects. As his guitar chops improved, Luther got a job as vocalist/bassist with Tall Milton Sheldon’s band. When Milton retired from music in 1962 to become a preacher, Luther switched to lead guitar and took over the group. “The people on Independence Boulevard named me Guitar Junior,” he recalls. “I carried a big crowd. I’d play in their back yards, on the streets and in the park.” Luther fell under the strong influence of the West Side giant Magic Sam when they played together in the mid-1960s. “I really dug the way Sam played,” Luther says. “He liked the way I played too. I had to play Sam Cooke’s song, “Somebody Have Mercy” every night for him, two or three times.” Luther also gigged around the West Side with Sunnyland Slim, Bobby Rush, Little Addison, Willie Kent and Jimmy Dawkins before cutting his first 45, for the Big Beat label, in 1972.

Sitting in with Muddy’s band the following year earned Luther his big break. He was offered a steady gig, and established himself as another of Muddy’s standout guitarists. Not before clearing up a few cases of mistaken identity, though. Between being confused with Luther “Georgia Boy” Johnson (a previous guitarist for Muddy) and Lonnie Brooks (known in his younger days as “Guitar Junior”), it took Luther a couple years to clarify his public image.

Luther made his U.S. album recording debut as a leader on Alligator’s Living Chicago Blues series in 1980. Before that, he had recorded only for European labels, and as a sideman.

When Muddy’s old band broke up in 1980, it didn’t take Luther long to put together his own group. Luther relocated to the Boston area in the early 1980s and has been leading his own band, based there, ever since. He’s recorded albums for Telarc and Bullseye Blues and maintains a very active touring schedule. With his big voice, high-energy performances and easy good humor, Luther has developed a devoted following. But mostly it’s his hard-edged guitar sound that draws the audiences. As he says, “I just naturally got that West Side style.”

ABOUT SUGAR RAY & THE BLUETONES

Have been playing their unique style of blues the world over for almost forty years.  Not limited to one style, but able to play Chicago Blues in the style of Muddy Waters. Little Walter and Billy Boy Arnold; Kansas City Swing in the style of “Big” Joe Turner; Texas Blues like “T” Bone Walker and Freddie King; and the swampy Louisiana sounds of “Lazy” Lester-all played with the distinctive originality of band leader Sugar Ray Norcia, vocals and harmonica, guitarist “Monster” Mike Welch, Anthony Geraci at the piano and Hammond Organ, Michael “Mudcat” Ward playing acoustic and electric bass, and drummer Neil Gouvin.

All of the members of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones have been featured on other Artists recordings which include Hubert Sumlin, John Hammond, Johnny Winter, Otis Grand, Pinetop Perkins, The Mannish Boys, Sugaray Rayford, Debbie Davies, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl and many more.

“Sugar Ray is the real deal. There is nobody better to represent this music.” - Kim Wilson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds

“Sugar Ray has great tone and phrasing, singing ad playing the harp. One of my favorites.” -Charlie Musslewhite

General Admission Tickets: $5

Join Cokie Roberts for a discussion of her newest book on the history of women in the US. This event takes place at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, and $5 tickets are required.

In this engrossing and informative companion to her New York Times bestsellers Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty, Cokie Roberts marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War by offering a riveting look at Washington, D.C. and the experiences, influence, and contributions of its women during this momentous period of American history.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, the small, social Southern town of Washington, D.C. found itself caught between warring sides in a four-year battle that would determine the future of the United States.

After the declaration of secession, many fascinating Southern women left the city, leaving their friends—such as Adele Cutts Douglas and Elizabeth Blair Lee—to grapple with questions of safety and sanitation as the capital was transformed into an immense Union army camp and later a hospital. With their husbands, brothers, and fathers marching off to war, either on the battlefield or in the halls of Congress, the women of Washington joined the cause as well. And more women went to the capital city to enlist as nurses, supply organizers, relief workers, and journalists. Many risked their lives making munitions in a highly flammable arsenal, toiled at the Treasury Department printing greenbacks to finance the war, and plied their needlework skills at the Navy Yard—once the sole province of men—to sew canvas gunpowder bags for the troops.

Cokie Roberts chronicles these women’s increasing independence, their political empowerment, their indispensable role in keeping the Union unified through the war, and in helping heal it once the fighting was done. She concludes that the war not only changed Washington, it also forever changed the place of women.

Sifting through newspaper articles, government records, and private letters and diaries—many never before published—Roberts brings the war-torn capital into focus through the lives of its formidable women.

Created by Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent, OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES features five local actors performing a mix of monologues and songs that lovingly honor the timeless tradition of Jewish comedy by poking fun at it.

Hilarious neuroses and tributes to comedy giants are put on full display. If you don’t laugh, you’re probably dead—even if you’ve never had a Jewish mother, visited a doctor or eaten kosher.

The show features comic songs—brand-new and satisfyingly old—as well as tributes to some of the giants of the comedy world and to the Old Jews Telling Jokes website, which inspired the show.

If you’ve ever walked into a bar with a priest, a rabbi and a frog then OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES will sit in the dark with you, give you a second opinion and ask you exactly where you got that.

What the Funk Brothers did for Motown…The Wrecking Crew did, only bigger, for the West Coast Sound. Six years in a row in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Grammy for “Record of the Year” went to Wrecking Crew recordings. And now, THE WRECKING CREW tells the story in pictures and that oh, so glorious sound. The favorite songs of a generation are all here, presented by the people who made them for you. THE WRECKING CREW is a documentary film produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film tells the story of the unsung musicians that provided the backbeat, the bottom and the swinging melody that drove many of the number one hits of the 1960’s. It didn’t matter if it was Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, The Monkees, The Byrds or The Beach Boys, these dedicated musicians brought the flair and musicianship that made the American “west coast sound” a dominant cultural force around the world. The film is a fun and moving tribute from Denny to his father and to the music, the times and to the secret star-making machine known only as “The Wrecking Crew”.

A gorgeous look inside honeybee colonies

Monday, June 10 at 7:30pm

Bookmark and Share

Taking a journey through the honeybee colonies in California, Switzerland, China, and Australia, “More Than Honey” explores bee decimation. The same scenario is repeated around the world: 50%-90% of bees are disappearing from colony to colony. The bee epidemic has started a phenomenon known in the scientist community as, “Colony Collapse Disorder.” The dying species has had a negative global effect, and without the bee population, our humanity will slowly be affected.

Director and writer, Markus Imhoof travels from the different regions to interview beekeepers’ work to preserve their colonies. With their knowledge and practice in the bee world, the beekeepers show the daily paradox working in both natures’ rhythm and against it.

“This. Film. Is. Fascinating.” – Cleveland International Film Fest*

“Surprisingly up-close images of bees at rest and in flight give buzz to an inescapably downbeat topic”

Featuring 2011 Grammy nominated vocalist Judy Pancoast

Pancoast was just eleven years old when her older sister told her about a song she’d heard on the radio, and said that the girl singing it sounded “just like you.”  That was the summer of 1970, and when Judy finally heard “(They Long to Be) Close to You” it was the beginning of a childhood adulation that would last well into her adult years.  She spent her adolescent and teen years listening nearly non-stop to the music of the brother and sister duo who called themselves “Carpenters,” and she became one of the charter members of their fan club at age 12.

Judy’s natural rich alto voice blended well with Karen’s, and she spent countless hours in front of a mirror with a hair brush “microphone” mimicking her idol’s voice.  Later, while a music major at the University of Maine, she was advised to “stop trying to sound like Karen Carpenter,” but although she managed finally to all but erase the traces of Karen’s styling, the influence had already had its impact.  Randy Schmidt, author of “Little Girl Blue: the Life of Karen Carpenter” says this about Judy: “…her velvety voice, phrasing and conversational delivery of a song are all products of years spent listening to the timeless recordings of the Carpenters. Her passion and joy for the material make Judy the perfect vocalist to pay tribute.”

“... Pancoast kept her audience thoroughly entertained for over two hours, reaching people on an emotional level. Pancoast didn’t settle for imitation. She channeled the essence of what The Carpenters always tried to do: show respect and warmth for the people they were singing to. And Pancoast has a voice to handle the technical challenges and emotive qualities of that music…. ”—Bill Copeland Music News

This Show is Sold Out! Thank you!

Between Identity, Willpower, and Passion:
This is Tango Now’s Identidad Renews the Tango Experience on the Stage

It is midnight outside: a magical and mystical time for hundreds of cultures past and present.  Respect, appreciation and fear for this moment infuses the bodies and minds of those brave enough to venture on it.  In Tango the midnight, its darkness, and the pulse of the city at that very moment conjures the deepest introspection, and opens up a window for change. But more than a moment in time, the midnight is a portal, it represents the end and the beginning, when and where things die, are born, and reborn, and this cycle goes on repeating itself for all eternity.

It is midnight inside: in the depths of people’s hearts and minds.  The introspective mood allows our main character, the Marionette, to realize her condition.  Devoid of freewill she suddenly grasps the distressing reality that, like most everyone around her, she has been manipulated her entire life.  On her side, the Duende, the incarnation and materialization of the midnight, the spirit of passion and change.  Against her, the Puppeteer, the manipulator, the one who won’t let her go.  What follows is a struggle for freedom, for a new identity, for willpower, and for the right to live life with the fullest of passions.

This is Tango Now’s Identidad, is the creation of three highly accomplished artists: dancers and choreographers Fernanda Ghi & Guillermo Merlo, and musician and anthropologist Alfredo Minetti.  They felt a gap in the world of tango shows as well as a need from contemporary audiences that was unfulfilled.  They decided then to go beyond the traditional tango show, creating a complete sensorial experience, using the powerful rationality and emotiveness, and the raw intensity and kinetic energy that only tango has, and created a story that resonates with any person living in the present.  In order to stage it, they decided for a tango quartet (bandoneón, violin, piano and double bass) and selected some of the greatest tangos composed and arranged by Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla.  They selected two more couples of dancers to share the stage with Fernanda & Guillermo, who choreographed the show with some of the best dance one will ever see. And finally, they teamed up with one of the greatest light designers in South America, Aníbal Rea, who took the challenge to add yet another incredible layer to this experience. The result is a tango experience unlike any other!

Every detail of this show has been meticulously and creatively crafted in order to create a magical and mystical experience for the senses.  Much more than performance takes place in the stage.  The trio designed the show to produce a synergy between the performers and spectators.  The nostalgia, sensuality, vulnerability, irony, and passion of tango pour out from the stage infusing every spectator.  The main goal of the performers is to touch the souls of the audiences. Through the deep melancholic passion and cathartic introspection of the tango, audiences will come to see their surroundings with the renewed spirit that the mythical midnight allows — feeling the world as a tango.

Renowned Rock & Roll photographer Kevin Mazur, has pulled together an impressive team for his first feature-length documentary about the changing face of celebrity and the many ways that the media has conveyed, defined, and even demeaned what it means to be famous today.Taking a historical ride through the early days of Hollywood and the rise of the paparazzi, $ellebrity explores how fame has changed from the highly-structured studio system to the current free-for-all press and paparazzi frenzy.

Candid interviews with Jennifer Aniston, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Sara Jessica Parker, and Kid Rock among others, help to give a glimpse into the lives of those on the front lines of our increasingly obsessive world of pop culture celebrity.

Fame is now a national pastime, it is what millions of us follow, believe in and seemingly what we care about most - as well as a billion dollar-a-year industry.  But what does our intense fascination with celebrity say about us? And how much is too high a price to pay for our own curiosity run rampant? $ellebrity captures the free-for-all of pop culture today and the ever-changing face of fame.

“An engrossing study in the communication possible…between man and beast.”
- Variety

- Collider.com

“A crowd-pleaser with a big heart”
- The Hollywood Reporter

Each year thousands of wild horses are rounded up and removed from public lands by the U.S. Government. All will need permanent homes. None has ever been touched by a human hand.

Wild Horse, Wild Ride tells the story of the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, an annual contest that dares 100 people to each tame a totally wild mustang in order to get it adopted into a better life beyond federal corrals.

Stunning and poignant, Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus’ debut feature documentary chronicles a handful of unforgettable characters from their first uneasy meeting with their horses and over three months as they attempt to transform from scared strangers to the closest of companions.

Eventually all will converge in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete against each other and offer the horses up for adoption at an auction in which the trainers, if they wish to keep their horses, must bid against the public.
Hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as a “crowd-pleaser with a big heart,” the film traverses across the United States to tell stories of the profound the bonds that can develop between people and animals. From the rolling hills of New Hampshire to the Navajo Nation to the heart of Cowboy Country, the film captures a journey that is at times harrowing, humorous, heartwarming and heartbreaking as these wild spirits - both human and horse - embark on the ride of their lives.

Powderwhore Productions, a backcountry ski film company based in Utah, is proud to announce its eighth annual ski movie, called “Choose Your Adventure.” The film will premiere at Brewvies in Salt Lake City on September 26th 2012, followed by a 50 city TOUR through ski towns throughout North America.

This movie is such a mixed bag of characters, exotic locations and action that we wanted to get that point across with the title. You really can’t guess what’s coming next in this film, like the Choose Your Own Adventure book series we enjoyed growing up. We’re exploring an abandoned mining town in the Arctic, dropping cliffs with Hugo Harrison in British Columbia, plunging into the Antarctic Sea in speedos, blasting through deep powder, catching up with crusty locals in the Wasatch and more.

Our interest lies in finding people with real stories and ski objectives. We wanted to tag along and capture their actions and motivation for heading into the mountains, creating more of an authentic experience. We traveled light and moved fast to avoid interfering with the actual adventures as they unfolded.

Despite the underwhelming winter of 2011-12, in which snowfall reached near record lows and unstable avalanche conditions, the Powderwhores were able to make the most of the conditions at home and abroad, with trips to Cerro Castillo, Chile; La Grave, France; the Antarctic Peninsula; Svalbard, Norway; Mount Foraker, Alaska; British Columbia, Canada, and the Wasatch Mountains in Utah.

The film features an array of characters from salty backcountry veterans to some of the top skiers and snowboarders, including Chris Davenport, Jake Sakson, Andrew McLean, Seth Wescott, Dylan Freed, Noah Howell, Matt Reardon, Drew Stoecklein, Forrest Coots, Ian Provo, Neil Provo, Chuck Mumford, Darrell Finlayson, Bob Athey, PY Leblanc, Jason Thompson,Todd Stuart and Hugo Harrison.

In the end, this is a feature-length ski film that celebrates exotic locations, wild adventures, and the dedicated personalities writing their own stories in snow.

ABOUT JON COHAN AND HIS GOLDEN RULERS
Jon Cohan and His Golden Rulers play classic American blues, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and rock and roll from the 1950s - 1970s. Drummer and bandleader Jon Cohan formed the band in 2009 with some of his favorite local musicians to perform at Right Turn Live, a sober cafe in Arlington, MA. Cohan’s goal was simple: to introduce audiences to the great groove-based music he grew up listening to. Since its inception the band has grown into a nine-piece outfit. Boston rock stalwarts like Phil Kaplan of Men and Volts and Sal Baglio of The Stompers join dynamic singer Erica Rothenberg, guitarist Mike Pyle, bassist Jeff Keithline, percussionist Stephen Whitney, saxophonist Artie Camacho, and keyboardist Bob Camacho. The combined talents of the musicians brings a fresh and swinging interpretation to some of the finest examples of American music, including some tasty, rockin’ Holiday tunes for this special Regent concert.

But his keen ear for the rhythms of words and the rhythms of dance has launched his career as a talented writer who is “fast becoming recognized as one of the top tap dance soloists in the country.” Ryan has worked with such great instructors and choreographers as Brenda Bufalino, Heather Cornell, Michelle Dorrance, Barbara Duffy, Sean Fielder, Derick K. Grant, Adrienne Hawkins, Josh Hilberman, Jeannie Hill, Jimmy Locust, Drika Overton, Jason Samuels Smith, Sarah Petronio, Sue Ronson and Dianne Walker.

In Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s Birth and for the very first time, experience Hendrix’s unforgettable August 1969 Woodstock concert on the big screen and in surround sound. The performance stands as one of the finest in rock music history and includes “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Fire,” “Purple Haze” and “Foxey Lady” as well as Hendrix’s dramatic interpretation of the “Star Spangled Banner”

The concert is preceded by a fascinating road to Woodstock documentary, directed by Grammy Award winner Bob Smeaton (Beatles Anthology, Band Of Gypsys, Festival Express), which reveals the struggle to stage the legendary festival and secure Hendrix as its headline artist. It includes footage and interviews with his band members such as Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, and Woodstock’s promoter Michael Lang.

This presentation features the original 16mm footage digitally restored together with a 5.1 audio surround mix by legendary engineer Eddie Kramer. Kramer originally recorded the Woodstock festival and also served Jimi Hendrix as his recording engineer throughout his entire career.

There is something very special about dance. A special magic to the human body moving well that we can all relate to. Add captivating music, glamour and pageantry and no wonder TV dance shows became such an overnight success.

The latest show from the Bellydance Superstars is the culmination of 10 years of touring the world – over 800 shows in 25 countries – pushing the boundaries of the art of bellydance to capture the artistry, magic and passion of this unique dance in all its variety.  So when looking for a name for the 2012-2013 show only one name seemed to sum up what it would be :  “THE MAGIC OF DANCE”

The Bellydance Superstars did not have the luxury of following in another’s footsteps; developing and improving on the work of others along a known course.  They were the first and only full time bellydance show touring the mainstream dance world.  As such they had a lot to prove, mindsets to change and educate as they defined and expanded on the understanding of what this dance art was.  They set a string of firsts; from national TV broadcasts of their shows in North America, Japan, China and elsewhere to performing top level shows in some of the most prestigious venues in the world; venues heretofore reserved for the likes of the ballet or super successful shows like Riverdance.  Their DVDs and CDs are the best known and distributed the world over – even officially released in China.

Above all the Bellydance Superstars are known for a great show – fast paced, lots of variety in music and dance styles, not afraid to fuse other dance arts from ballet to African into their repertoire; seeing bellydance as a big picture with a big future.  As in past shows, the vibrant and exciting music is matched only by the many beautiful costume changes for each number.  All in all when you have great dancers, great music, beautiful costumes, and a dedicated team on a mission to deliver, surprise and excite you will definitely achieve a Magic – that is what THE MAGIC OF DANCE is set to do.

Jimi Hendrix 70th Birthday Celebration Double Feature

7:15pm: “Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child”—his legendary story in his own words.  (91 minutes)

9:00pm: “Jimi Plays Berkeley”—restored and expanded 2012 edition.  (72 minutes)

Together, these films present a rare chance for both Hendrix enthusiasts and those simply curious as to what the fuss is all about to learn about his life and legacy, while coming as close as possible to witnessing him perform live in all his sonic power and visual splendor.

Voodoo Child is filled with never-before-seen photographs and film footage from the Hendrix family archive and features a soundtrack that includes such iconic Hendrix recordings as “Purple Haze,” “Hey Joe,” “Fire,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” together with never-before-heard live performances. Funk legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic renown is featured as the voice of Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Plays Berkeley showcases some of Hendrix’s finest ever performances filmed over two concerts at the Berkeley (California) Community Theatre on May 30, 1970. The film documents the political unrest and student uprisings in Berkeley juxtaposed against blistering Hendrix live performances of “Johnny B. Goode,” “Star Spangled Banner,” “I Don’t Live Today” and, “Purple Haze. This new digitally restored transfer from the original 16mm negative includes more than 15 minutes of newly discovered, previously unseen documentary and performance footage of such classic songs as “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Machine Gun” and “Hear My Train A Comin’” not featured in the original film release.

On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues‐infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalogue including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.”

Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery. Now, for the first time, fans in over 40 territories worldwide will be able to get a front row seat to experience this historic event in glorious high definition and incredible surround sound. Experience it on the big screen for a strictly limited period only.

What Jimi Hendrix accomplished in the span of four short years before his death in 1970 at age 27 is nothing short of phenomenal. Now, more than four decades later, Hendrix is widely considered the greatest electric guitarist of all time. On Tuesday, November 13, Arlington Community Education and the Regent Theatre will co-host Hendrix at 70, a panel discussion of the life, music and legacy of this rock icon. The program will take place in the Arlington High School Media Center, 869 Massachusetts Avenue.

Panelists include Steve Morse, journalist and long-time Boston Globe music editor; Joel J. Brattin, Hendrix scholar and Professor of Humanities at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and Carter Alan, author and host of “Sunday Morning Blues” on WZLX/Boston. Leland Stein, Regent Theatre co-owner and lifelong Hendrix enthusiast, will moderate the panel discussion and the Q&A to follow.

The program will explore Hendrix’s legacy and his diverse – and, at times, surprising – influences, and the tremendous impact he has had on a wide swath of music and musicians that followed him. Panelists will highlight songs from his non-hit repertoire with a focus on his gentler side and more lyrical tunes – the hidden Hendrix beyond ”Purple Haze” and “Hey Joe” and the contemplative, humble man behind the flamboyant stage persona.

In the days following this event, the Regent Theatre will host several additional programs in celebration of Hendrix’s 70th birthday.

Thursday, November 15. Hendrix documentary film double-feature: “Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child” (2010), 7:15pm, and “Jimi Plays Berkeley” (2012), 9pm. Buy Tickets

Friday, November 16, 8pm. All Star Jam celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix hosted by the Thaddeus Hogarth Power Trio with Special Guests Tomo Fujita, Julien Kasper, Marty Walsh, and Neil Itzler. Buy Tickets

The Doors Live At The Bowl ’68 is widely held as the band’s best performance ever captured on film. Now for the first time fans can watch the complete version in digitally re–mastered glory as the entire concert has been carefully restored from the original camera negatives to include the lost performances of Hello I Love You, Texas Radio and the Big Beat and Spanish Caravan. The film opens with a special feature of interviews with the band talking about what it meant to perform at the Hollywood Bowl and the enduring significance of this concert. More than 40 years after their debut album, The Doors’ music and legacy are more influential than ever before. Though they’ve had scores of imitators, there’s never been another band quite like them and this film will appeal to their many fans – both their original followers and a younger generation discovering The Doors now.

“His humble sense of humility is what makes Trapper’s songs so strong… He makes you feel like you are the person he’s singing about.  The Few & the Far Between is another strong addition to the Chris Trapper/Push Stars catalog.”  Popdose

CHRIS TRAPPER began his career as the front man for late-90’s alternative rock band THE PUSH STARS (Capitol Records).  With four CD releases and several high profile national tours—including a run with Matchbox Twenty—The Push Stars served to establish Chris as an authentic talent.

As a modern day singer /songwriter, Chris is most known for his song This Time, the #1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers /Warner Bros Pictures).

The newest CD (released October 2011), The Few & The Far Between, is a collection of 14 songs written and performed by Chris Trapper.  This new work was Produced, Recorded and Mixed by Dan McLoughlin (The Push Stars, Mike Peters, Juliana Hatfield) at the Vault Recording Studio, Hoboken, NJ.

Focus tracks include the CD opener, Here All Along, featuring guest vocals by Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, The More I Think featuring vocals and slide guitar by Colin Hay of Men at Work and Ghost In Your Arms featuring backing vocals from Boston’s own Kristen Cifelli.

The New York Times calls his work “classic pop perfection.”

A prolific songwriter, Chris can boast high profile film placements including There’s Something About Mary (Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz), The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), Say It Isn’t So (Heather Graham) and Gun Shy (Sandra Bullock, Liam Neeson) as well as significant television placements including All My Children, Women’s Murder Club, Malcolm In The Middle, a coveted placement in George Clooney’s final episode of ER, the theme song for WB Networks dramedy Pepper Dennis and a cameo on-screen appearance with the show’s star, Rebecca Romjin.

Chris Trapper’s music can best be described as lyrically driven roots-pop with a knack for telling everyday stories filled with extra-ordinary characters.

A respected songwriter of the highest caliber, Chris has written 7 songs with/for Canadian band GREAT BIG SEA, including their #1 single “Sea Of No Cares” from the certified-platinum Sea Of No Cares CD.  Great Big Sea covered Trapper’s song “Everything Shines” and their version served as the debut single off their certified-gold Road Rage CD album. Chris’ songwriting collaborations with Great Big Sea earned him two prestigious SOCAN awards. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Antigone Rising have performed other notable versions of Trapper’s songs.

Chris Trapper’s ability to craft songs that are both elegant and accessible is evident on each solo CD in his deep Discography. There is a smart, honest quality to the lyrics that never panders.

Trapper’s live show is a favorite among fans of alt–acoustic music. His on–stage persona is warm and inclusive, his organic understanding of classic pop melody infectious. Audience members seem to particularly appreciate the lighthearted moments with the ukulele. They depart the venue at the end of the evening with the sense of having been truly entertained.

“It’s an incredibly rare musician, particularly in the world of popular music, who is able to forge a career based on quiet dignity and steadfast integrity.”

OPENER:
A Fragile Tomorrow has become one of the most respected band of brothers on the road, largely thanks to their venerable work ethic, stellar musicianship, and fans in high places. The four-piece powerpop band is comprised of identical brothers Sean and Dominic Kelly, their younger brother Brendan, and Shaun Rhoades. The band will release their fourth CD “Be Nice Be Careful,” in January.  The new disc was recorded with music legend Mitch Easter as producer and Ted Comerford as co-producer. Known for his work with bands like R.E.M. and Pavement, Easter brought his trademark jangle-pop sound to the band’s compositions.

In 1965 Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones svengali, asked filmmaker Peter Whitehead (The Fall, Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London) to accompany them on a quick tour of Ireland. Whitehead was astonished. Not only by the incredible power of the Stones’ performances but especially by the raw energy of the crowds of young people that rushed them everywhere. This new version of this behind-the scenes diary of the early Stones has never been seen; Mick Gochanour and Robin Klein, the team that brought The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus to the screen, have painstakingly restored over 90,000 frames of optical screen prints and negative, going back to the original sound tapes and 3-track live recordings. Included are electrifying performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “The Last Time,” and “Time is on My Side.” Charlie Is My Darling is an invaluable document, the unseen story of the band becoming the legend.

In addition the feature, the film includes an introduction with Kurt Loder, a filmmaker interview with Dave Grohl and Andrew Loog Oldham, a bonus feature on the restoration of the film, and interviews with the band members.

Compass International Pictures, Trancas International Films, and Screenvision turn back the clock to October 1978 in the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois for John Carpenter’s immortal classic, Halloween. On October 30th & 31st, the original genre-defining horror masterpiece graces the big screen once again. This nationwide release is the widest the film has seen since originally shocking audiences in ’78, and will be presented in a striking new HD transfer and 5.1 audio.

Michael Myers has spent the last 15 years locked away inside a sanitarium under the care of child psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis. On October 30, 1978, Myers escapes and makes his way back home to Haddonfield, turning a night of tricks and treats into something much more sinister for three young women. Dr. Loomis is their only hope, but will be find his shadow-dwelling patient in time?

Screenvision’s presentation of Halloween will include an exclusive documentary short written and directed by Fangoria’s Justin Beahm, You Can’t Kill The Bogeyman: 35 Years of Halloween, focusing on the undeniable impact the film, and series, has had on culture and the genre.

Some of the many themes addressed in this year’s 2nd annual Arlington International Film Festival are the skill of ‘story-telling’ as is taught and practiced in Marrakech, the historical journey of Indian sarodist, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan and his legendary music, an African-American’s journey from the segregated south to national recognition told through his carving, tooling and dyeing of pictures on leather, non-violence practiced by a little-known movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, an intimate spiritual interaction among a trio of human beings during the Holocaust… caught up in a moment of history told through performances of lieders by Schubert, Schumann and Wolf, autism and the struggle of a family to survive it’s demands, and what about the reality of reaching middle age in 2012 and not having found a partner; can we embrace this and celebrate life as it is and still feel whole?  In addition to film screenings there will be Q & A’s with filmmakers/main characters, panel discussions, special live performances and more.

The Arlington International Film Festival is much more than just a film festival; it is a celebration of cultures as well as being a platform for recognizing the common global human experience.  Please come and share these experiences with us.

MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE is an extraordinary story about finding hope, joy and music behind bars. Rita Chiarelli, Canada’s Queen of the Blues, takes a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the Blues: Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary, a.k.a Angola Prison – formerly the bloodiest prison in America.  Rita’s trip turns into an historic jailhouse performance, playing with – rather than for – inmates serving life sentences. Their shared bond of music, and Chiarelli’s ebullient personality, draw striking revelations from the inmates. Rather than sensational stories of convicts, we witness remarkable voices of hope as their love of music radiates humanity and redemption on their quest for forgiveness. Official Film Web Site:

“This is truly an extraordinary documentary which finds hope in the darkest of places, and the music which comes out of it is exhilarating. It’s going to be hard to find another documentary this year with as much heart as this one.” Los Angeles Examiner

“wow…WOW! A film that anyone with hope in his heart will appreciate.” Blog Critics

“Excuse me for gushing, but documentary filmmaking does not get any better than this. This is one of those documentaries that deserve to be seen by… everyone.” Cine Source Magazine

Created by Carol Campbell | Directed by Amy West | Co-Produced by Danielle Hanson & Gail Erdos to benefit Our Space, Inc.

The Goddess Diaries began as an experiment. Several women were asked to write about a specific milestone in their life as part of a Winter Solstice performance at a local church. Borrowing from the Western European agricultural wheel of the year, each monologue represents a time in the growing/harvest season; likewise, each season is a metaphor for each woman’s life event. From a seventeen-year-old’s first gynecological exam to a sixty-six-year-old’s reflection on her divorce and a tween’s exuberance over the success of her first girl-boy party, the storytellers range in age from 11 to 66.

Our Space, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to embracing children and teens who have faced or are confronting cancer by inspiring peace, spirit, and healing within a supportive community, through play, learning, and creative exploration.
Join us for a magical evening filled with love & community and be prepared to be moved, touched & inspired.

In 1995, Zoso was formed to create the most mesmerizing and accurate portrayal of “the biggest band of the 1970’s” - Led Zeppelin (Rolling Stone Magazine). Each member was selected to portray both the appearance and playing styles of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones. Zoso almost immediately developed an outstanding regional reputation and were awarded “Best Tribute Act in California” by Rock City News.

In 1999, Zoso began touring nationally, playing a remarkable 2,400 live performances, honing their show to become one of the most musically and visually rewarding acts in North America. Their passion, musical ability, showmanship and precise attention to detail earned them critical acclaim, name recognition and a large loyal following. The Los Angeles Times hailed the group as being “head and shoulders above all other Zeppelin tributes,” and the Chicago Sun-Times declared Zoso to be “the closest to the original of any tribute.”

Every year since its conception, Zoso continues to play 150 - 180 high profile concerts at performance arts centers, civic centers, theaters, festivals, and universities. Since 2004, the band has been working on numerous shows with Live Nation including a rotation of 9 House of Blues venues. The four permanent members’ mastery of authentic vintage instruments coupled with spot-on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, their compelling stage persona and distinct Led Zeppelin sound, with astounding visual imagery recreates the music, magic, and mystery of a Zeppelin concert. Each of the timeless hit songs performed in their sets are known and loved by generations of fans.

Zoso is comprised of Matt Jernigan (Robert Plant), John McDaniel (Jimmy Page), Adam Sandling (John Paul Jones), and Greg Thompson (John Bonham),

If you missed Led Zeppelin live in the 70’s or are looking for a great chance to relive the “Hammer of the Gods” phenomenon, you must experience what the St. Petersburg Times calls “the most exacting of the Zeppelin tribute bands in existence.”

The Rise And Fall Of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and at play, interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well, and traces the downward trajectory of a band who were at one point “The Only Band That Matters”. This is not a film that pulls any punches, but neither does it overlook the life-changing effect that The Clash brought to so many. Over 90 minutes it paints the fascinating inside story of rival, treachery and betrayal, and the internal band dynamics and managerial interferance that ultimately led The Clash to self-destruct.

For years, filmmakers have been trying to capture the work of one of America’s foremost horror masters: H.P. Lovecraft.  The folks at the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society have finally got it right, and Matson Films is pleased to release an exciting, fun and scary double-bill (150 minutes total) of new films.

Aint it Cool News wrote, “I loved every moment… the first Lovecraftian film done completely right.”  Film Threat says, “(Director) Branney nails the spirit of Lovecraft.”  And the Chicago Examiner wrote, “reviews cannot do it justice - it must be seen to be believed.”

THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS (103 min), Lovecraft’s classic tale of alien horror bursts onto the screen in the style of the classic horror films of
the 1930s. Professor Albert Wilmarth investigates legends of strange creatures in the remote hills of Vermont. His inquiry reveals a terrifying glimpse of the truth that lurks behind the legends. A thrilling adventure of supernatural horror.

THE CALL OF CTHULHU (47 min), a silent movie shot in Mythoscope, is HP Lovecraft’s most famous story. It is the only story to feature the
celebrated monster Cthulhu and follows an adventurous young man’s crusade to unravel the Cult of Cthulhu. The story embodies HPL’s nihilistic world view, his cosmic perspective, and his sense that mankind is doomed by its own insignificance.

MATA Presents “Radium Girls”

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watch dials
the latest rage…until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace
Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Written with warmth and humor, critics called Radium Girls “powerful” and “engrossing”. The case of the five “Radium Girls” forever changed labor laws in the United States, traveling all the way up to the Supreme Court and leading to major changes in workers compensation.  The show passionately proves the importance of advocates on both sides representing their clients to the best of their abilities.

WHO says that the Golden Years of Las Vegas Entertainment are gone forever?
After 20 years away, John Warrener returns to the Regent with his newly revamped Las Vegas review show.
So as the title says, the show will be John “Together Again” with his Arlington audience but in a new Vegas format “For The Very First Time!”
In 1993 when the Regent Theatre was turned into a performing center, John who describes himself as a poor man’s blend of Tom Jones, Robert Goulet and Vic Damone with a seasoning of Sinatra, was one of the original performers at the new Regent.  Doing his own shows and also creating a few special shows such as the TRIBUTE TO JUDY GARLAND and THE ANDREWS SISTERS SHOW for the new owner, Rick Stavros. he also MCed the Grand Opening Gala Shows. Two years ago, he returned here to produce TRILOGY’S TRIBUTE TO THE THE ANDREW SISTERS which received rave reviews.
Warrener will reprise his favorite numbers along with some newer songs for the June show. Mix in a bit of comedy and some audience involvement with some special guests and “BINGO!” we have TOGETHER AGAIN FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. Concert goers can look forward to such numbers as the GONNA DO GREAT THINGS medley; the sinister, DELILAH;  CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU Medley; the melancholy, I DREAMED A DREAM; the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM and a host of other songs.
He’ll be joined by Regent newcomer Lisa Chaney singing songs from Judy Garland (including “Over the Rainbow”) along with some lively dancers and “show girls!

The Monterey Pop Festival ran for three days in June 1967. For most of the five shows, the arena was jammed to bursting with perhaps as many as 10,000 people. The live performances were spectacularly successful. Janis Joplin, who was singing with Big Brother and the Holding Company, pulled out all the stops with a raw, powerful performance that helped establish her as the preeminent female rock singer of her day.

The Who climaxed a brilliant set by smashing their equipment at the conclusion of “My Generation”. Jimi Hendrix (in the American debut of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) offered an awesome display of his virtuosity as a guitarist and as a showman, humping his Marshall amplifiers and then setting his Stratocaster ablaze. Another highlight was Ravi Shankar’s meditative afternoon of Indian ragas. And then there was Otis Redding, the dynamic soul man turned in what many present believe was the festival’s best performance. ABC offered $400,000 for network rights to Pennebaker’s film (which was released in theaters after ABC decided it was too far out for the TV audience).
Featuring:
Janis Joplin “Combination of the Two”
Scott McKenzie “If You’re Going To San Francisco”
The Mamas and the Papas “Creque Alley”, “California Dreamin’”, “I’ve Got A Feelin’”
Canned Heat “Rollin and Tumblin’”
Hughy Masekela “Bajabula Bonke” (Healing Song)
Jefferson Airplane “High Flyin’ Bird”, “Today”
Eric Burden and the Animals “Paint it Black”
The Who “My Generation”
Country Joe and the Fish “Section 43”
Otis Redding “Shake”, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”
Jimi Hendrix “Wild Thing”
Ravi Shankar “Raga Bhimpalasi”

David Bowie’s final electrifying performance as Ziggy Stardust in 1973 at London’s Hammersmith Odeon Theater. The feature length film captures the aura surrounding one of the most unusual stars of the contemporary music scene.

Framed by a smattering of behind-the-scenes footage, the bulk of the film concerns the actual concert, notable as the final time that Bowie would perform under the Ziggy Stardust persona, an announcement that, at the time, led many fans to mistakenly believe Bowie was retiring altogether.
Features numerous songs from Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane and other Bowie albums, including “Ziggy Stardust,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Changes,” and “Space Oddity,” as well as a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat.” Though a shortened version of the film was broadcast on television in 1974, the film did not receive a full theatrical release until 1983.

His live tribute band “One Sweet Dream” (a lyric from the “Abbey Road album), is the premiere Beatles / McCartney tribute show that takes fans on a Magical Mystery Tour through The Beatles as well as his years with “Wings” and into the “Sir paul” era. Mike and his band were recently joined on stage for a live set with former “Wings” guitarist Denny Laine, who afterwards publicly proclaimed to the audience “it’s just like Paul isn’t it”!
OSD has also raised money for charitable causes including “The Make A Wish Foundation” and most recently “The Oral Cancer Foundation” with a special tribute concert to George Harrison on the 10th anniversary of his death. Segments from the concert were featured on WTNH-TV’s “Connecticut Style”, and the complete concert was broadcast on Comcast Cablevison to raise more awareness and funds for oral cancer research.
